May is always a fun month! Usually we are past the frequent showers, the days become longer, and the temperature climbs! Even though school and work are still in full swing, it’s starting to feel like summer is in the air, and there are plenty of fun things around the corner in the New West area to keep you busy until then! May 17th: Seawall by Stanley Park Paint & Sip Night
It would be hard to find a more beautiful setting than the Stanley Park Seawall in the summer! On May 17th from 7:00pm-9:30, try your hand at painting the beautiful sea wall at 100 Braid Street Studio’s latest Paint and Sip Night! As usual, there will be delicious snacks and refreshments, a glass of wine or beer, and all the painting supplies to create a beautiful masterpiece. These New West paint nights provide a wonderful opportunity to unwind, catch up with friends and have fun! Note: this event is 19+.
All Throughout May: The Ghostly New Westminster Walking Tour
Do you appreciate all things spooky and paranormal? If so – the Ghostly New Westminster Tour is a great activity for you! Now that the weather is improving, too, it’s an awesome chance to spend some time outside in your favourite city! During this 90 minute walking tour, you will hear all sorts of true, chilling stories about New West, along with paying visits to some ghostly sites and fascinating landmarks! May 22nd: A Night in Asia
If you’ve read our blog before, you’ve heard us talk all about the fun themed nights at Century House! There’s been journeys all the way to Scotland, Ireland, nights with the Piano Man himself, and now you’ll step into a Night in Asia! May 24th-27th: I Walked The Line at Anvil Centre
What’s a month without taking in some form of theatre?! You won’t want to miss this play at Anvil Centre this month. “I Walked the Line” tells the story of Allan Morgan (and many others), who has lived the experience of walking the picket line during a Union Strike in 2016. In the time of the play, Morgan takes viewers on a journey from start to finish, and truly celebrates the men and women who have ever been in a similar situation. You will definitely want to catch this powerful passion project this month!
May 25th: Don’t Stop Believing
Music lovers of New West! At the end of this May, with the help of the Maple Leaf Singers, it’s time to get movin’ and groovin’! Join in at Massey Theatre for “Don’t Stop Believin,’” where you will be taken on an exciting musical journey through the ages! You will not be able to resist the urge to get up and dance, as classic tunes roll out from the 1940’s, all the way to the present day! We can guarantee you will leave the theatre with a heart full of music and a smile on your face!
May 25th: Hyack Festival and International Parade
We could not finish this blog post without writing about the Hyack Festival and Parade! For many, this is the community event of the year, and encapsulates inclusivity and the spirit of a connected community! At 11:00am, on Saturday May 25th, the parade begins! Beginning at 6th avenue, and finishing at Queen’s Park! The Hyack parade boasts countless international entries each year, celebrating the cultural diversity of New Westminster’s proud community. After the parade, you won’t want to miss Uptown Street Fest! Where Belmont Street is transformed into a hub of exciting activities, vendors, delicious food and no shortage of FUN! This is a great event to celebrate living in New Westminster.
