Get Into the Christmas Spirit With These Holiday Themed Activities

The Christmas season is officially upon us, and there are plenty of ways to get into a festive mindset before the 25th! There are a myriad of holiday activities offered in New Westminster that are sure to get you there all month long. Whether getting into the holly jolly spirit for you involves being active, treating yourself to the arts, or immersing yourself in a Christmas festival or market, the city of New Westminster has something for everyone this year!

Ice Skating With the One and Only Santa Clause!

It wouldn’t be the most wonderful time of year without everyone’s favourite, Old Saint Nick. If you’d like to get into the spirit while getting some exercise, this is the activity for you. On Saturday, December 22nd, head down to Moody Park Arena, for an evening the whole family can enjoy! From 6:30 to 8:00 pm, you can strap on a pair of skates and show off your best ice moves with the man in red himself! If skating isn’t your thing, not to worry. Included in the cost of admission is the chance to create beautiful Christmas crafts and decorate delicious cookies. This will be a fun-filled night sure to leave you feeling rosy cheeked and excited for the upcoming holidays!

Indulge in the Arts With Some True Christmas Classics

Everyone loves the familiar melody of the Nutcracker. This year, why not treat yourself to a truly magical holiday show put on by the Royal City Youth Ballet? From the dazzling costumes and nostalgic music, to the adorable children and the enchanting dancing, this performance will no doubt make you feel the magic of Christmas through and through! Tickets are only $25 for youth and $35 for adults, and available here for two shows on Saturday, December 22nd.

If a play is more your cup of tea, no problem! On the Friday and Saturday before Christmas, enjoy an old favourite at the Anvil Centre Theatre; A Christmas Carol. No matter how many times you’ve heard the story, it’s always special. Join Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim (played by members of the New West Performing Arts Collective) as they bring to life the Dickens’ Holiday classic. An evening to remember, taking in this play will hopefully cause only Christmas Merriment, and no “bah humbugs” to be heard! Get your tickets now.

Festivals and Markets

There’s nothing like spending an afternoon or evening wandering around a holiday themed festival. Bundle up and enjoy Winter Celebrations, a magical winter wonderland set up from December 18th-29th. This winter festival has a multitude of things to do. Whether you take a walk in the mysteriously beautiful Winter Labyrinth, give your ears a treat with the number of musical performances offered, or you’re simply in it for the Christmas goodies, you will not be disappointed! Check out the Anvil Centre website for a full list of offered activities. Just remember to make your visit before the 23rd or after Boxing Day, as the festival takes a three-day break through Christmas.

Indulging in treats and sweets is one of the best parts of the holiday season, and the Royal Cities Farmers Market has no shortage of these! Located on Belmont Street, check out the winter addition of the market on Saturday, December 22nd from 11am to 3pm for a taste of local BC artisan products, mouth watering baked treats, yummy beverages, and hand made crafts! You’d be hard pressed to leave without finding something that catches your eye, and each vendor boasts one of a kind stocking stuffers and beautifully unique gifts for everyone in your life. Whether you’re doing your holiday shopping, or scouring the produce stands for ingredients for Christmas dinner, you won’t leave the market empty handed!

The holidays are an excellent time to really treasure time with friends and family, and what better way to do that than to head out to one of the many activities offered in your own neighbourhood!
